Officials say reports of an active shooter on the campus of Villanova University were a hoax. "There was a call that came in around 4:30 Thursday afternoon to law enforcement and the 9-1-1 center saying there was an active shooter in the law school building and that there was at least one victim who was wounded. That has turned out not to be true," said Delaware County DA Jack Stollsteimer after police swarmed to Villanova's campus following the report that came in during a welcoming Mass for incoming Villanova students and their families. School president Reverend Peter Donohue emailed students less than two hours after the alert calling it "a cruel hoax." So far, there's no word who was responsible and law enforcement is investigating. The district attorney called the hoax a crime and says they'll track down whoever was responsible.

Pennsylvania is refusing to hand over personal voter information to the U.S. Department of Justice. Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt said the DOJ's request for the state's electronic voter roll did not provide any legal justification, and called it a "concerning attempt to expand the federal government's role" in the electoral process. The voter roll includes sensitive data like driver's license and Social Security numbers. Schmidt said the department is welcome to request the state's public index of registered voters, which is available for 20 dollars.

Though hundreds of miles offshore, Hurricane Erin brought high winds and coastal flooding to parts of the Garden State as well as Delaware overnight. Erin prompted evacuations in Egg Harbor Township, including guests at motels and residents in low-lying areas of the township. High tide is expected to be the worst of the indirect effects of the storm today. All 21 counties in New Jersey remain under a state of emergency that Governor Murphy announced yesterday. Murphy has asked people to avoid going into the ocean and many New Jersey beaches have been closed to swimming. A coastal flood warning in several Jersey Shore counties is in effect until tomorrow morning.

A federal judge has ruled that President Trump's former personal lawyer Alina Habba has been unlawfully working as US attorney in New Jersey for the past month. The decision follows a legal challenge brought against Habba's appointment by multiple defendants. The judge wrote that Habba's actions since July 1st may now be declared void. Several current and former members of Congress from both parties who were involved in drafting the original law have filed briefs in the case. They argue her appointment after a panel of federal judges chose not extend her tenure contradicts the 2007 law that enforced the separation of powers between Congress and the executive branch. Yesterday's ruling could bring to a halt hundreds of federal criminal cases in New Jersey.
